What it’s like to travel internationally with two teachers

By: Katherine Williams September 12, 2017.

Recently during the summer of 2017 a few MHS students, including myself, traveled to London, England for 9 days with two teachers for a school trip. The teachers were an English teacher, Mrs. Davis, and a theatre teacher, Mrs. Duggan. There were about 20 students so they really put their trust into us. Fortunately, they chose correctly because we all had a great life changing experience with very little problems occurring.

An average person doesn’t usually travel internationally with teachers, which makes it a bit odd. It may sound strange, but in reality it wasn’t. They were surprisingly comfortable and trustworthy with all the students. First we all had to meet at the airport. When we got in Mrs. Davis started to individually take our passports and printing our plane tickets. As we went through the airport Davis and Duggan helped everyone at each step. They made sure no one was left behind or unsure of what they were supposed to do. Even though it was a bit stressful to have 20 kids simultaneously asking questions, they kept their cool and answered what we needed.

Once we actually got into London we had a bit more help than the other schools that came with us. One of our teachers, Duggan, actually lived in the city for years 15 years prior so she knew how to get around and the best places to go. She was able to give us ideas on where to go during our freetime like certain bookstores, chinatown to get bubble waffles and where to get half priced theatre tickets. She was surprisingly more helpful than our tour guide who was from there.

We mostly traveled by the Tube which is like a cleaner and faster subway. We each had our own individual cards which allowed us to travel  by Tube for free. Usually whenever we traveled as a group we would count off so Davis knew we were all there. Things usually went smoothly, but there were a few mix ups. Such as when someone lost their ticket to get on the train. That was fixed with them buying a new one. Or when I couldn’t get on the Tube because the doors closed right before. I ended up just getting on the next one alone. Another one we had was when a few of us (including myself)we’re told to get on a train but everyone else jumped off last second and we couldn’t. So we just got off the next stop and took a different train to go back to where the group was. The last one we had was the same situation with everyone jumping off but when someone was getting off the door closed on their foot. She thankfully got her foot out before the train started moving.

The point is that they didn’t get mad, annoyed or angry. They trusted us and believed we could do things on our own. The trip was an unforgettable experience and I wouldn’t want to go with anyone else. This adventure should definitely be experienced by anyone who is able to get the chance. You’ll build bonds, create memories and see the world.
