New England 2016 Winter Prediction Report

12/1/16

By: Dan Damon

We have entered the month of December, meaning that winter is coming in hot (in a cold way…)! Many predictions for the 2016-2017 New England winter have been gathered from various sources, so you better bundle yourselves up, because this year the weather isn’t going to be mild during winter, but rather pretty dang frigid. This will hopefully make you aware of what’s going on this winter, because it’s not expected to be pretty at all. We are Sachems, that means we need to Stay Strong, and Stay Warm!

While December and January are obviously going to be freezing, the coldness will be taken to a whole new level during February, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. Apparently this is going to be a stronger winter than last year, as there will most likely be lots of precipitation going above and beyond average, and of course, it is going to occur mostly in February. February seems like a month that nobody should take lightly this year, because the snow will not be light, but heavy. Mark your calendars, because you are currently receiving a warning about a big storm coming to the Virginia Capes and will deliver a heavy snowstorm with strong winds for parts of the Tennessee Valley, through western North Carolina, the Virginias, Maryland, and Delaware northeast into southern New England, and here’s the kicker, some of the said location could get 1-2 feet of the white fluffy blanket, but this blanket isn’t going to keep you warm and cozy, but numb, so be prepared!

The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts December 2-16 to be an overall crazy month because of all the back and forth changes between sunny, snowy, and rainy occurrences, and changes between mild and very cold temperatures. The beginning of the month of December will be mostly rainy and mild with a little snow, but towards the middle getting a little more snowy, with the holiday week of December 23-28 being quite snowy, but then sunny and mild. But December 29-31 labeled as having flurries and very cold temperature on your New Year’s Eve. Heading into January, it is supposed to be a very easy-going, as the first week is planned to be sunny and mild. With a little sprinkles here and there. Then the rest of the month is like your average type of winter with a normal type of cold and snowy weather, but overall a pretty mild month. Then middle to late February is described to have the most snowfall, so February is also classified as the coldest and snowiest month this winter on this site.

The Weather Channel appears to believe the New England area is getting the coldest out of the whole USA.

Recap: While all the sites didn’t have identical thoughts, they all seemed to agree that December is going to probably be pretty average, maybe a little below the standards. January is going to be mild, with not much to worry about, and February will pose as our biggest challenge in snowfall and toe-numbing cold weather.

Stay warm and be prepared for some weather!
