The Power of Being a Sachem

Megan Hubbard

As a Freshman, the Lock in was COMPLETELY new to me. I have heard so many good things about this event and seen some fun videos from last year. With all these questions in mind I had the idea of asking some fellow freshman some questions before and the after the Lock In. I decided to interview Avery Thomas as well as Eric Grady.

Avery had a completely different view of the lock in comdsc_0009-2pared to Eric. She had known about the lock in for a long time because she has had people she knows attend the event. Avery wasn’t just going because she “ wanted to see what it was all about” , but she also wanted to go because of her friends. Overall she wanted to just have a good time and get more involved with student council.

Eric on the other hand did not have any prior knowledge about the Lock In. He wasn’t even going to go in the first place! Even though he strides to take part of student council, the thought of staying up all night scared him off. With a little convincing from friends he decided to go after all.

Something interesting was that I asked both of them if they had the opportunity to do the lock in a couple years ago would they have done it. Avery said she would, but it depends on who would be going to it. Eric flat out said no, which is not that surprising considering he wasn’t going to go in the first place. Even though it took some persuading, I think Eric would have regretted staying home that night.dsc_0417

Even though both had a different outlook on the Lock in they both wanted something similar. Not just to have fun, but to be involved. I had asked them both what event would you want to do if it was your choice? They both wanted to do something that EVERYONE could be apart of. They may not have known what exactly they wanted to do, but they wanted to accommodate everyone’s interests.

After a long night I decided to ask them how it was/ was it fun? Would you do it again? Was it what you were hoping for? To all of these questions they answered yes. They didn’t have any real expectations for the Lock in but if they did, their experiences exceeded those expectations. Events held by the student council is a great way to be more involved, meet new people, and even find out more of who you are.

This just really goes to show that doing things like this can benefit you no matter who you are. I took people with almost polar opposite opinions but they both got the same kind of experience. It’s good to throw yourself into things like this. I look at it this way, you can’t be scared of something you have never tried. Next time you are thinking about doing something, just go for it! Live your high school experience with no regrets.
