U.S Sanctions on North Korea

Andrew Fields, 9/12/17

Monday September 11, 2017, was an eventful day.  The United Nations Security Council meeting at the headquarters in New York was being held to talk about North Korea’s actions towards testing a hydrogen bomb which was set off underneath a North Korean mountain known as Mount Mantap. After this test, a proposal was then issued intending to stop the funding towards North Korea’s nuclear testing. Soon after the proposal was made Kim Jong Un fired back by threatening that if this proposal is sanctioned by the UN, the United States would be brought the most pain and suffering that the country has ever seen in its entire history. The US updated the proposal to call for a fuel embargo, a freezing of assets, and a call for a travel ban on the country. These are some of the harshest sanctions that we’ve ever put forth towards this country. It’s scary to think that we now live in a world where the possibility of nuclear war exists and could potenially kill millions of innocent civilians. Hopefully we are not at that point in time right now. It should be noted that North Korea most likely does not yet have the technology to do any real damage to the United States mainland. Even though North Korea has recently been making threats of having weapons which could possibly hit the mainland’s of the United States. Right now they can’t effectively attack us. They could hit a United States owned territories such as Guam or Hawaii which again was another threat made by North Korea last month.

Later that day the United Nations meeting had begun. The votes came to 15-0 meaning the sanctions were going to be passed. Later on during the meeting the leaders of the UN began to become frustrated with President Trump, as he did not put more pressure on China when they have the most power over North Korea. China shares an 800 mile border with North Korea and trades with them. Trump needs to take bigger steps towards them and here’s why.  If President Trump can get China to stop their trade with the country it will cut off North Korea’s main source of income. This could greatly stop their funding and ultimately stall their weapons program. As soon as that happens we can force North Korea to hand over their nuclear weapons and can hopefully control their nuclear weapons.. At the moment North Korea can keep making threats but these sanctions are coming into play. After the UN meeting President Trump  stated  “These Sanctions are small steps on what ultimately needs to happen”. He is completely right because stopping some of their imports won’t stop the advancements of his weapons program. We as a country need to take bigger steps towards them because if we don’t act fast and soon they could have just as much nuclear power as the United States which we can’t have since their goal is to completely destroy us.
