The New Generation of Apple iPhones

By Ben Gibson on September 14, 2017

In case you didn’t hear about the release of the new generation of iphones, here’s what you missed. Apple unveiled the two new iphone 8’s and the iphone X on September 12 during the 2017 Keynote Event at the new Apple Park, along with other releases that slipped under the radar like the LTE Apple Watch and a new Apple TV. The iphone 8’s mostly resemble our current iphones we love so dearly in terms of design. The iphone 8 and 8 Plus feature better hardware such as the new A11 Bionic processor which, besides sounding “like something from Mission  : Impossible”, makes the phone faster and run even more buttery smooth than the iphone 7’s already admirable A10 chip. The 8 and 8 Plus reportedly feature the same front and back camera that is again, better than the previous generation. The 8’s harbor a glass back as opposed to aluminum which allows perhaps the most exciting addition: wireless charging. You’ll be able to set your phone down onto a Qi- compatible charger, basically just a block or flat circle that will start fueling your phone up, no wires necessary.  Places like starbucks already offer wireless charging in their establishments and newer cars are even beginning to feature them as well.

The real talking piece, however was the iphone X, which look as if an iphone and a window pane collided into one futuristic handheld device. Imagine your current iphone, but all the non- glass parts melting away into screen. The new AMOLED screen is nearly edge to edge, minus a small dip on the top middle of the phone for the front camera and sensors, yet having the entirety of the front of the phone dedicated to the screen poses a threat to the home button. Actually, they removed it all together. Touch I.D. has taken a backseat for now, handing the reigns to the controversial Face I.D. to unlock the phone, it will be constantly searching for a face to scan. When it finds one, preferably yours, it will scan it with an assortment of sensors to distinguish you from a vast sea of strangers. This is the most ambitious attempt at facial recognition so far in a smartphone, and many aren’t eager for the change, especially after Craig Federighi attempted to show off the new technology at the phone demo, but failed. Apple offered an explanation for the mishap, but still suffered a drop in stocks after the incident.

Apple still has several months to perfect the revolutionary new Face ID until the iphone X is released in November. The seemingly experimental new implementation of this tech has raised many eyebrows, but we won’t be able to judge it properly until it is available to use. With the removal of Touch ID, however, it is going to have to be spot-on to replace that essential feature.

In addition to these new features, the iphone X offers an impressive camera, quirky new emojis that sync movement with your face and voice, and a new focus on augmented reality technology.

The iphone 8 and 8 Plus will be available to pre-order on September 15, with a release date a week later on the 22nd. The 64GB model will run for $699 while the 256GB variant will go for $849. The iphone X will be shipping out on November 3 with an expected extremely limited supply. You can pre-order them on October 27th with $999 for the 64GB model and the 256GB model will rise to a price of $1,149, making these the most expensive iphones ever made.
