My first home and away game Journalism September 18, 2017September 27, 2017 By: Dyllan Welby 9/18/17 High school cheerleading is a lot different than middle school and all stars. But it’s also a lot more fun despite having more responsibility. The first Friday of school I had my first home game. When I first got there I was a little nervous since there was much more of a crowd than we had during middle school. But once we actually started doing stuff i slowly began to become more comfortable. I was a little embarrassed though at times when i messed up the cheers because my friends were sitting behind me. But it was understandable considering I had just learned most of them 2 days before the game and I’m not good at picking up on things right away. But eventually I started doing better and if I made a mistake I would realize right away and remember to fix it next time. I also hadn’t had many night games in middle school so I found out how much I liked them this night. The game just seemed more intense during night with the lights shining on the field and everything else around being dark. I also found it cool how the band played during the games since they never had that in middle school. Before the game started there was a dedication to Mr. Nelson who used to coach football and played a big role in the Middleboro community. He passed away over the summer. So since Mr. Nelson was such an important person to everyone in Middleboro, especially the football team, they dedicated their season to him. Halftime was probably my favorite part of the game. We went first and performed only part of our routine because we had just recently gotten our routine and were most used to the pyramid and dance. After we performed the twirlers went out and did an amazing job. Three of them even twirled with their batons on fire. It was so cool. After halftime nothing really interesting happened. We continued to do our sideline cheers. I got better and better each time we did one. At the end we won the game 53-12. The following week we had our away game which was a lot different. School gets out at 1:50 and the bus for the game was leaving at 3:30. Since I live close to the school I decided to go home first and eat then come back. When my friend came to pick me up 5 minutes earlier then she told me I was a little unprepared. I ended up forgetting my black yoga pants and sweatshirt that we were required to bring. Luckily my friend Julia, who was still at the school for field hockey had a black sweatshirt in her locker. Since I now had that covered I just needed to find a way to get my yoga pants. Expecting a no, I called my moms boyfriend to see if he could drop it off. But to my surprise he said yes. I asked him politely to try to hurry because the bus was running a little late but would be there any minute. He got to the school before the bus came. I was very relieved because I now had everything I needed. The bus came about 10 minutes later. We were riding with the JV team, which I wasn’t really excited about this because sometimes they can be really loud and annoying, but I could deal with it. After sitting on the bus for a few minutes not moving, we began to realize that the bus wouldn’t start. It had already been about 20 minutes since the varsity team left, but we weren’t worried about being late because we had planned on being pretty early anyways. We ended up having to get off the bus and wait for a new one. It arrived about 15 minutes later and this time we were on our way within the first two minutes of being on the bus. When we finally got to the game we sat down on the sidelines and ate while the football players warmed up. The other team was really nice and brought over delicious cookies they made for us.
