Irma takes out everything that’s in its way Journalism September 14, 2017September 25, 2017 Hannah Kelley September 14th, 2017 Hurricane Irma significantly affected many people on the east coast of Florida and soon to be Georgia. People’s houses got destroyed, pets were lost, and the residents had to give up everything to move away from the hurricane to remain safe. For people that are not familiar with what a hurricane is, it is a storm with violent winds that can be dangerous and even kill someone if caught up in the powerful storm. People in the Caribbeans and in places like Florida experience hurricanes a lot because of where they are located. The hurricane began september 10th 2017 that now has faded in Florida but will soon be approaching Georgia. The people who were hit with hurricane Irma experienced power outages and had to evacuate due to how strong the storm was. The power outages were so bad that they may not have power for months My grandmother lives in Florida and tried to get a plane ticket so she could come to Massachusetts, but since everyone was trying to evacuate Florida and get far away from the area, there was no more flight tickets and it was too late because the storm was on its way. She ended up staying in a shelter which was very safe with a barrier around the shelter with plenty of food and water. This storm has majorly affected people by ripping everything they had from under their feet and never seeing it again. Everything they ever had was gone due to this horrendous storm. Florida was literally underwater and some people died due to how bad the storm was. In Miami cars were in the water and people couldn’t go anywhere or do anything, they were trapped. The whole entire Barbuda island was wiped out and the damage was disturbing to look at. This hurricane was 2 times the size of this island. Some people evacuated, and those who didn’t died. Hurricane Irma started off as a category 4 hurricane but as it died down it became a category 2 when it hit Georgia. When my grandmother returned back home her house it was fortunately still remaining but many palm trees and debris was surrounding her house and she couldn’t safely get into her house. 8 people died at a nursing home with an air conditioning outage 3 days after Irma ravaged the state. This is such an important topic and people need to understand how bad this storm was and how dangerous it was. People died, people lost family members, pets, had no food, no shelter, no water, they were all trapped and could not do anything to stop the storm from coming. Plane tickets were expensive and some people had no choice but to stay in Florida and risk their lives. The storm was coming so fast and was so big that it was bigger than the state itself. The people who lived were lucky during this storm. When Irma was over the state, it looked like a whole different planet with everything destroyed. This was one of the worst storms since hurricane Harvey.
