Seniors deserve a break

As a senior in highschool, you have experienced nearly every aspect of school. You have spent 12 years in the schooling system, doing everything in your power to thrive. You’ve spent countless hours in this school doing classwork, homework, tests, quizzes…. you name it we’ve done it. After all this hard work, seniors deserve to have certain privileges. I believe that by senior year we should be able to leave campus during lunch to get food, and then come back when lunch is over.

By the time you are a senior in highschool you are 17 and 18 years old. By this time in your life you are making big decisions in life whether you’re applying to college or planning for your future career. Many seniors are also working while going to school to pay for things such as a car or insurance. By the time you are a senior, you already are holding a large amount of responsibility. With this responsibility, you should be allowed to leave school during lunch as long as you return in time to get back to class. If you are responsible enough to drive a car and work, you should be allowed to leave campus for 30 minutes.

This break during lunch can be very beneficial for many reasons. The first reason being this break off of campus can actually help both the student and the teacher. By leaving and getting fresh air, this can encourage the student to pay more attention in class because they don’t feel like they’re being cooped up all day. This could help boost seniors grades, helping their GPA increase. They would also be more attentive in class helping student participation go up. Leaving during lunch would also encourage kids who do not like school to come, because they know they’re guaranteed a break out of school during the day. This could also help student attendance go up because students would actually want to come to school.

As a senior, I feel like we deserve a little bit of freedom after all the years of hard work we have put in over the years. As long as we are back before our next class, it should not be a big deal for the school or staff. With this freedom, students wouldn’t skip class, or leave school without permission during the day, because they know they are guaranteed this small break during lunch. Students could even sign a waiver agreeing that they will be back before their next class, or they will lose the privilege. The school could keep track of who is coming in and out by having students signing both in and out of school.

Furthermore, as a senior in high school, students are already holding a lot of responsibility on their backs. I feel as though allowing students to leave campus during lunch would be beneficial for both students and teachers throughout the building. By giving seniors this freedom, it will better the relationship between staff and students by showing trust in us. After all the time we have put into school it is only right to let us have a privilege as our last year in school.
